Important and interesting collection of ephemera relating to 'St John's Church Hanley'. The church building is listed and still stands, but is reported to be opening as a mosque and Islamic centre. The graveyard was exhumed and developed to form part of the new A50.
Included is a large collection of photographs. They include church renovations (including various bell photos) rectory garden parties, church processions and Sunday school, many annotated to reverse that detail the photos. Some family photographs but over 50 images including photos and photo postcards. Relating to the time of Rev Tamplin as Vicar.
Also included is a minute book relating to the truteees of a committee set up to fund and rebuild the church and vicarage from 1797 -1853, (in distressed binding).
The book features Josiah Wedgwood II and Josiah Spode on the committee among others. Items on Spode on the committee among others. Items on the minutes include funding details for the vicarage including the Prince Regent. There is a copy of a letter relating to the Vicar (Atkins) refusing to a second sermon and how it was resolved. Also includes items relating to the building process, funding and appointment of curates.
Also included is a photo of Thomas Vallance, Father in law of Stanley Matthews.
This is a very interesting lot of Stoke on Trent / Potteries history.
